I'm not a Bahá'í myself, but I absolutely love their approach to the emancipation of women.... for International Womens Day...

A Statement of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of the United States

The emancipation of women, the achievement of full equality between the sexes, is essential to human progress and the transformation of society. Inequality retards not only the advancement of women but the progress of civilization itself. The persistent denial of equality to one-half of the world's population is an affront to human dignity. It promotes destructive attitudes and habits in men and women that pass from the family to the work place, to political life, and, ultimately, to international relations. On no grounds, moral, biological, or traditional, can inequality be justified. The moral and psychological climate necessary to enable our nation to establish social justice and to contribute to global peace will be created only when women attain full partnership with men in all fields of endeavor. ¹

The systematic oppression of women is a conspicuous and tragic fact of history. Restricted to narrow spheres of activity in the life of society, denied educational opportunities and basic human rights, subjected to violence, and frequently treated as less than human, women have been prevented from realizing their true potential. Age-old patterns of subordination, reflected in popular culture, literature and art, law, and even religious scriptures, continue to pervade every aspect of life. Despite the advancement of political and civil rights for women in America and the widespread acceptance of equality in principle, full equality has not been achieved.

The damaging effects of gender prejudice are a fault line beneath the foundation of our national life. The gains for women rest uneasily on unchanged, often unexamined, inherited assumptions. Much remains to be done. The achievement of full equality requires a new understanding of who we are, what is our purpose in life, and how we relate to one another an understanding that will compel us to reshape our lives and thereby our society.

At no time since the founding of the women's rights movement in America has the need to focus on this issue been greater. We stand at the threshold of a new century and a new millennium. Their challenges are already upon us, influencing our families, our lifestyles, our nation, our world. In the process of human evolution, the ages of infancy and childhood are past. The turbulence of adolescence is slowly and painfully preparing us for the age of maturity, when prejudice and exploitation will be abolished and unity established. The elements necessary to unify peoples and nations are precisely those needed to bring about equality of the sexes and to improve the relationships between women and men. The effort to overcome the history of inequality requires the full participation of every man, woman, youth, and child.

Over a century ago, for the first time in religious history, Bahá'u'lláh, the Founder of the Bahá'í Faith, in announcing God's purpose for the age, proclaimed the principle of the equality of women and men, saying: "Women and men have been and will always be equal in the sight of God."² The establishment of equal rights and privileges for women and men, Bahá'u'lláh says, is a precondition for the attainment of a wider unity that will ensure the well-being and security of all peoples. The Bahá'í Writings state emphatically that, "When all mankind shall receive the same opportunity of education and the equality of men and women be realized, the foundations of war will be utterly destroyed."³

Thus the Bahá'í vision of equality between the sexes rests on the central spiritual principle of the oneness of humankind. The principle of oneness requires that we "regard humanity as a single individual, and one's own self as a member of that corporeal form," and that we foster an unshakable consciousness that, "if pain or injury afflicts any member of that body, it must inevitably result in suffering for all the rest."⁴

Bahá'u'lláh teaches that the divine purpose of creation is the achievement of unity among all peoples:

Know ye not why We created you all from the same dust? That no one should exalt himself over the other. Ponder at all times in your hearts how ye were created. Since We have created you all from one same substance it is incumbent on you to be even as one soul, to walk with the same feet, eat with the same mouth and dwell in the same land, that from your inmost being, by your deeds and actions, the signs of oneness and the essence of detachment may be made manifest.⁵

The full and equal participation of women in all spheres of life is essential to social and economic development, the abolition of war, and the ultimate establishment of a united world. In the Bahá'í Scriptures the equality of the sexes is a cornerstone of God's plan for human development and prosperity:

The world of humanity is possessed of two wings: the male and the female. So long as these two wings are not equivalent in strength, the bird will not fly. Until womankind reaches the same degree as man, until she enjoys the same arena of activity, extraordinary attainment for humanity will not be realized; humanity cannot wing its way to heights of real attainment. When the two wings . . . become equivalent in strength, enjoying the same prerogatives, the flight of man will be exceedingly lofty and extraordinary.⁶

The Bahá'í Writings state that to proclaim equality is not to deny that differences in function between women and men exist but rather to affirm the complementary roles men and women fulfill in the home and society at large. Stating that the acquisition of knowledge serves as "a ladder for [human] ascent,"Bahá'u'lláh prescribes identical education for women and men but stipulates that, when resources are limited, first priority should be given to the education of women and girls.⁷ The education of girls is particularly important because, although both parents have responsibilities for the rearing of children, it is through educated mothers that the benefits of knowledge can be most effectively diffused throughout society.

Reverence for, and protection of, motherhood have often been used as justification for keeping women socially and economically disadvantaged. It is this discriminatory and injurious result that must change. Great honor and nobility are rightly conferred on the station of motherhood and the importance of training children. Addressing the high station of motherhood, the Bahá'í Writings state, "O ye loving mothers, know ye that in God's sight, the best of all ways to worship Him is to educate the children and train them in all the perfections of humankind. . . ."⁸ The great challenge facing society is to make social and economic provisions for the full and equal participation of women in all aspects of life while simultaneously reinforcing the critical functions of motherhood.

Asserting that women and men share similar "station and rank" and "are equally the recipients of powers and endowments from God,"the Bahá'í teachings offer a model of equality based on the concept of partnership.⁹ Only when women become full participants in all domains of life and enter the important arenas of decision-making will humanity be prepared to embark on the next stage of its collective development.

Bahá'í Scripture emphatically states that women will be the greatest factor in establishing universal peace and international arbitration. "So it will come to pass that when women participate fully and equally in the affairs of the world, when they enter confidently and capably the great arena of laws and politics, war will cease; for woman will be the obstacle and hindrance to it."¹⁰

The elimination of discrimination against women is a spiritual and moral imperative that must ultimately reshape existing legal, economic, and social arrangements. Promoting the entry of greater numbers of women into positions of prominence and authority is a necessary but not sufficient step in creating a just social order. Without fundamental changes in the attitudes and values of individuals and in the underlying ethos of social institutions full equality between women and men cannot be achieved. A community based on partnership, a community in which aggression and the use of force are supplanted by cooperation and consultation, requires the transformation of the human heart.

The world in the past has been ruled by force, and man has dominated over woman by reason of his more forceful and aggressive qualities both of body and mind. But the balance is already shifting; force is losing its dominance, and mental alertness, intuition, and the spiritual qualities of love and service, in which woman is strong, are gaining ascendancy. Hence the new age will be an age less masculine and more permeated with the feminine ideals . . . an age in which the masculine and feminine elements of civilization will be more evenly balanced.¹¹

Men have an inescapable duty to promote the equality of women. The presumption of superiority by men thwarts the ambition of women and inhibits the creation of an environment in which equality may reign. The destructive effects of inequality prevent men from maturing and developing the qualities necessary to meet the challenges of the new millennium. "As long as women are prevented from attaining their highest possibilities," the Bahá'í Writings state, "so long will men be unable to achieve the greatness which might be theirs."¹² It is essential that men engage in a careful, deliberate examination of attitudes, feelings, and behavior deeply rooted in cultural habit, that block the equal participation of women and stifle the growth of men. The willingness of men to take responsibility for equality will create an optimum environment for progress: "When men own the equality of women there will be no need for them to struggle for their rights!"¹³

The long-standing and deeply rooted condition of inequality must be eliminated. To overcome such a condition requires the exercise of nothing short of "genuine love, extreme patience, true humility, consummate tact, sound initiative, mature wisdom, and deliberate, persistent, and prayerful effort."¹⁴ Ultimately, Bahá'u'lláh promises, a day will come when men will welcome women in all aspects of life. Now is the time to move decisively toward that promised future.

Maree Scarlett was born in Auckland, New Zealand and has written performed and recited poetry and the spoken word all over the world. Maree has written live music reviews in Ireland and has been a book reviewer, has done voice over’s for radio and was the voice of campaigns such as the Big Day Out, Powderﬁnger, Ronnie Size and Soundz, to name a few. She has recorded voice samples for people such as Jeff Scantlebury of the Brand New Heavies and she has performed at the home of famous French artist Bernard Locca. Some of Maree’s earlier works are contained at Stanford University in the Andrei Voznesensky archives.

In New Zealand Maree has performed on the same bill as C.K. Stead, Sonja Yelich, Karyn Hay and Michael Hurst. Award winning writer, poet, reviewer and critic David Eggleton approached Maree and asked her for new poetry which later he published in Blackmail Press # 27, an online journal. She has arranged, produced and directed recitals for Montana Poetry Day, Corbans Estate Wine Cellar and the Devonport Depot Artspace.

Kevin Ireland (O.B.E) has long been a supporter of Maree’s work. She has recited on radio several times and has been interviewed in Pavement magazine and various other publications and magazines.

Maree has appeared in short ﬁlms, one of which featured her performing poetry in a Freemason Lodge. This ﬁlm was shown as part of Auckland Arts Festival ‘05 and waspresented on large screen in Aotea Square. Maree has a BA in Philosophy and a minor in Gender Studies. In 2010 she has accepted an offer to participate in a Masters Degree in Psychotherapy. Maree enjoys theatrical training and has been a presenter on The Flea, radio 88.2fm.

After amazing sold out parties at Ministry of Sound and in Room 2 of Matter for CiRcOloCo on New Year's Day UHMM is quickly turning into one of the coolest parties in London.

One month sabbatical in January in recovery position from Circoloco, UHMM return to the small club with big ideas 'East Village' to host the basement with headline guest Ali Kuru, Tom King, Stuart Patterson & Simon Young....

ALI KURU is part of Nick Curly's achingly cool and equally popular (8bit Records.) Part of what's now become known as the Mannheim sound, the combination of rolling beats with lush vocals and jazzy licks has quite literally exploded on to the dance floors of every underground club from Ibiza to Berlin. Ali is one of the most in demand artists on the label and is flying all the way from Istanbul to join us.

DJ support comes from Tom King flying the Spunk Records flag. Tom was recently asked to play at CiRcOloCo at Matter on New Years Day and will be collaborating with East Village resident Stuart Patterson and Fabric regular Simon Young on 30th January. Expect to hear underground vibes done true justice on the goliath soundsystem at East Village.

How can you describe Habbo, in a nutshell?
Habbo is a virtual world and social networking environment for teenagers. It's an online hangout where teens can meet up, play games and develop their self-expression.

The core of the Habbo experience is the virtual world or virtual “hotel”, Habbo Hotel. Millions of teenagers meet each other every day in Habbo’s cafés, clubs, at the pool area or in the millions of private rooms created by the Habbos themselves. Currently there are over 60 million user-generated rooms in the different Habbo communities.

What are the key factors behind its success?
Habbo is all about self-expression, it provides teens with a safe environment in which to express themselves creatively. The key to Habbo is social interactivity: meeting other Habbos and having fun together.

What makes it different to other, similar, online environments?
The level of self-expression in Habbo is what sets it apart form other virtual worlds. The Habbo community is always packed with fun events whether it is seasonal events (Christmas, Summer etc.), competitions, celebrity visits etc. In addition to the actual virtual world, all community members have their own Habbo home pages where they can present their virtual life in Habbo. The personal pages are naturally highly customizable and can be used for sharing content, forming different kinds of groups etc. Habbo pages are tightly linked to the virtual world: you can, for example, access users’ own rooms with a click of a button as well as include friend lists and game scores from the community. Habbos can also join different kinds of groups and make group pages for themselves and their friends.

What is your specific role?
As Country Manager I’m responsible for the managing the UK team, the P&L, and day to day operations in the UK. I’m also responsible for strategic marketing partnerships and helping to bring exclusive content in-world such as music and movie celebrities for meet and greets.

What lessons can musicians/music industry learn from a project like Habbo?
Entering a virtual world is all about engagement, it gives acts a chance to speak to their fans in real time and promote their music to a captive teenage audience. Whereas traditional advertising was merely talking at teens, Habbo allows acts to have a deep conversation with their fans and to gauge their feedback on their latest tracks.

What will you be talking about at YAIC?
I will be talking about the Habbo approach to our community, how we listen to and engage with millions of teens, and how we facilitate their activity and creativity. I will also speak about the business models behind Habbo which delivered over €50m in turnover last year.

You work as a musician yourself, is that right?
Indeed, I've worked in the music business for over 20 years. I still have a keen interest in writing and producing music and also DJing from time to time. Having a creative sideline is a good compliment to working in technology, and keeps you energized about both music and technology!

You toured with U2? You must have some great anecdotes!
I was in a band called Marxman on the Talkin' Loud label and we had a LOT of fun doing U2 support gigs like Roundhay Park in Leeds UK (audience of 190,000) and also my hometown of Dublin. Bono is perhaps the king of anecdotes, none of which I can repeat ;-) Around the same time we did Europe with Depeche Mode on the Songs of Faith and Devotion tour, that was an entirely different kettle of fish, full of all night parties and even more unrepeatable anecdotes.

Can you describe your work as Lifeblood?
Lifeblood Productions "Music For All Media" is my own production company for projects such as film and TV music and also remixes, more info can be found at www.lifebloodproductions.co.uk.

Will you be talking about Lifeblood also at YAIC?
I think the aspects of music production I could talk about will be more than familiar to the YAIC attendees, so will keep the presentation on Habbo, new technology opportunities and best practice. Having said that, if anyone wants to know more I would be happy to speak after the presentation.

What are the five main challenges facing the music industry in 2009?
* Teenagers have more interest in engaging with music than ever, and more means of doing so, but in the large part, very little interest in actually buying music in the traditional manner
* The quantity of music content / sites can be overwhelming - so peer recommendation and community is vital - music blogs are a fascinating example of technology facilitating the sheer love of music, but frustratingly these are not monetized
* Industry heavy-handedness with file sharing creates a negative relationship with music lovers - a lose-lose situation. Spotify is a glimpse of the win-win alternative.
* As the industry struggles to maintain existing business models and increasingly niche distribution infrastructure, adoption of new business models can be slow, and can happen too late to make a difference, sadly.
* As Tim O'Reilly wrote in 2002 "Obscurity is a far greater threat to authors and creative artists than piracy" - in 2009 this could equally apply to the labels themselves.

"City of God’s Son (COGS) is all-things: an epic, a musical, a soundscape, a movie for the blind, an art installation, and a coming of age story. Through its blend of multiple media and art genres, COGS explores new grounds for unconventional storytelling and ultimately gives rise to the world’s first “Beat Cinematic”. I arrived at this term by combining various mediums including 3D audio, original music production, sound design, and dialogue samples. Using some of hip-hop and film’s greatest talents, I wanted to create my own cross-medium ensemble cast and out of many mediums create something epic and new. Hip-hop is the perfect choice for this because, like this project, it is a genre created using only the resources available and re-contextualizing them to create something bold and innovative.

More than just a remix or mash-up, COGS comments on the icon of the gangster, the media obsession with this character, and its function within hip hop culture. Homage to arguably hip hop's most culturally potent era, COGS explores the mythology behind musical icons and gangster film icons alike, and creates a world in which the two co-exist. COGS ties these together by playing off of the listener's familiarities of these genres and re-contextualizing them within a coming of age crime drama set in a mythical jungle metropolis.

The story explores the relationship between father and son and the struggle to define themselves in a world where their futures appear economically preordained. COGS riffs on the icon and myth of the gangster used generously throughout the history of hip-hop and American pop culture. The story embraces both the dichotomy of such societal reverence and media obsession with the moral quandary such a lifestyle calls into question. By using some of the genre’s most influential artists and manipulating them into characters that humanize and at times contradict their media persona, COGS aims to dissect concepts of machismo and push the envelope for using music as a more directly narrative medium. It also interweaves many classic crime film samples into the sound design and score of the piece, melding together the world of film with music into a new format of visceral soundscape. And in all of this there is the unique invention of self-proclamation; artists labeling themselves, touting beefs with other artists, and challenging the status quo.

This project is inspired by the many nights I spent roaming the city late at night as a graffiti artist as a kid, often just listening to my walkman. I was always inspired by the transformation of space at night versus daytime and how music and graffiti connected the two worlds. It is with this in mind that I am trying to connect the mythical city in COGS to the musical and cinematic memories in the listener’s mind. By playing with the listener's psychological and nostalgic associations with verses from well-known songs and dialogue from films, COGS creates its own mythology threaded together and playing off of familiar stories and plotlines and in effect sampling the listeners memories of music and film to create a new cross medium narrative.

At that time (mid 90’s), before reality TV, before hip-hop became THE commercial music format, the culture and its marquee artists were larger than life characters. Through this project I seek to ressurect some of that mythology by reinserting the very personas these artists promote to sell records, and putting them in a more human and vulnerable coming of age crime saga where they are now young men looking up to the gangster icon characters played by their father figures (Sam Jackson, Delroy Lindo). It has been said that film is the manipulation of space, and music the manipulation of time. Thus COGS is a manipulation of the deleted scene, the unreleased song, the space in between image and sound that connects the two.

Many of the beats I produced for this project have a layered meaning to them; the sample, the arrangements, the artist on the song, the verse, the placement within the story, the tone, all of these factors play into a larger dialogue, cultural commentary and narrative function. The function of this project is to change the function of music today from a disposable single based format to a longer form experience that may require several listens to fully digest, much how one would watch a film. It is with this ear for detail that I first heard Joe Bataan's music (which was used as background music in a skit on The Fugees The Score album) and sought it out. So I wanted to flip the function, instead of Nas rhyming over a Joe Bataan sample, I wanted Joe Bataan to tell a story over a reinterpreted Nas record, and create a dynamic soundscape that has its own cultural/historical meaning behind it completely unique of the original song’s tone or message, and connecting the past to the future, all within an epic greek tragedy.

Being primarily a visual artist for most of my life, it always struck me that there was always some kind of disconnect in what vision I had in my head, and the process of how that translates to the canvas. I always appreciated the process of creating that image and the execution, but I always found that there was no such thing as the exact image in your head being on canvas, in fact, I found that most of the strongest points in creating work were in the unintentional mistakes that pushed the piece in another direction. While the interpretation and process of that thought may prove successful in the creative process, what about that thought in its original form? It is with this in mind that COGS aims to create within the listeners head their own completely original visual interpretation based on a combination of visual associations with films and their own personal association to rap verses they recognize. Through visceral sound, created through an intricate mix of sampled sounds, sound bites, and rap verses, one can create something completely unique in their own mind made from something created out of thousands of appropriated sources.

The mix kicks off very chilled with an unusually little ambient tune by Zomby, the Don of wonky Dubstep beats, before launching into Laurie Anderson's 1981 ambient classic 'O Superman'.

You get to hear the lost 1977 German Disco killer 'Love Machine' followed by a Reggae cover of Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love'. Keeping it fresh, you'll hear the much talked about Aeroplanes mix of 'Paris' by indie band Friendly Fires and Various Production's ultra cool remix of Adele's 'Chasing Pavements'.

A flashback to the old skool is Zinc's '128 Trek' which devastates the dance floor today as it did back in '99. Japanese artist Akira Kiteshi's 'Pinball' is fresh off the press and completely barking - sounds like Kiteshi San plonked a microphone into the innards of a pinball machine.

How do you top that? Well, we can and the beats get faster and housier for a while before the Latin flavoured Factory sound of Quando Quango brings you gently down to earth with 'Love Tempo', a proper pre-Rave Hacienda classic.

As a closer, you'll get a mad Italian drummer, some Carl Craig magic and finally some cheeky Swedes' doing wonders with an old Marvin Gaye tune.

"Back in the night in the day I used to play a lot of what were then seen as straight ahead Jazz records. Before the heady 1990's days of Acid Jazz, before the Jazz Not Jazz trips, and well before the Nu Jazz times too.

I usually played in dive bars below seedy hotels, old Victorian pubs still full of Withnail and I types, South American restaurants full of extras from Scarface and ex-strip bars. All very downbeat and sordid.

And, amazingly, people used to come down to these places and dance their asses off. Heady times!

What goes around, comes around, happily and now on my travels I'm playing these old sounds again. And people are still digging them.

In 1996, following several years of recording and touring with the band Marxman, I started writing and producing music as Lifeblood Productions.

The idea behind Lifeblood was to provide "Music For All Media" eg film, TV, advertising, multimedia etc. and today the client list includes RTE ONE, Sky Broadband, Northern Bank, Channel 5, MTV, TnaG and films The Waiting Room, Derailed, I Want Candy, Mean Machine, Human Traffic and more.

The name comes from an interview I read with Philip King, who succinctly stated that "Music is the lifeblood of Ireland", so thanks Philip for that inspiration!
